Job Summary: Under immediate to general supervision, the Peer Specialist (PS) provides peer support services; serves as a client advocate; provides client information and peer support for clients in outpatient settings. The PS performs a wide range of tasks to assist clients in regaining control over their own recovery process. The PS will role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Using the goal setting process the PS will:
  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals for treatment and recovery.
  • Assist clients in determining the steps that the client needs to take in order to reach his or her recovery goals.
  • Assess recovery stage and appropriate interventions for that stage.
  • Serve as a liaison between the client and clinician.
  • Assist clinician in outreaching, engaging and re-engaging clients in services.
  • The PS will provide linkages, connections, engagement and outreach with the goal of supporting an individual or family to participate fully in choosing the appropriate services.
  • Endorse harm reduction, and support connections to comprehensive community-based services targeted to reduce harm and producing incremental improvements to overall health.
  • Connecting client's professional and non-professional services and resources available in the community.
  • Utilizing their specific training, the PS will:
    • Lead as well as teach clients how to facilitate Recovery Dialogues by utilizing the focus conversation (ORID) method.
    • Provides supports to aid the long-term recovery process.
    • Developing a one-on one relation in which a peer leader encourages, motivates and support clients through treatment process and recovery.
    • Teach clients how to identify and combat negative self-talk.
    • Teach clients how to identify and overcome their fears.
    • Support the vocational choices consumers make and refer them to vocational services.
    • Assist non-client staff in identifying program environments that are conducive to recovery; lend their unique insight into mental illness and what makes recovery possible.
    • Attend treatment team meetings to promote client's use of self-directed recovery tools.
    • Utilizing their unique recovery experience, the PS will:
      • Teach and role model the value of every individual's recovery experience.
      • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
      • Use their own recovery story to build hope and inform clients and staff.
      • The PS will maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, journals, and other relevant material.
        • Continue to develop and share recovery-oriented material with other PSs at the continuing education assemblies and on the PS electronic bulletin board.
        • Attend continuing education assemblies when offered.
        • Attend relevant seminars, meetings, and in-service trainings when offered.
        • The PS will serve as a recovery agent by:
          • Providing and advocating for effective recovery-based services.
          • Assisting clients in obtaining services that suit that individual's recovery needs.
          • Inform clients about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process.
          • Assist clients in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and stigma-busting. Organizational Relationships: Supervision Received: Peer Specialist receives supervision from Clinical Supervisor.

            • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
            • Certifications: Successful completion of Peer Specialist Training and Peer Specialist
            • Internship Program. Other Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
              • Must be a client or family member of a client of mental health services.
              • Organizational skills.
              • Creative problem-solving.
              • Knowledge of and ability to apply crisis intervention skills.
              • Ability to observe, report, and keep records on client's recovery process.
              • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
              • Ability to use supervision to enhance own performance.
              • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
              • Ability to work to achieve the mission and goals of this agency.
              • Ability to perform light physical work.
