Staff Technician, R&D Engineering

Job Description:

The R&D Engineering Technician position is for an individual maintaining a broad range of hands-on machine operating capabilities, basic computer skills and good knowledge of Collins aircraft brake manufacturing processes. This individual should be capable of working in a laboratory environment, completing basic machining and equipment operations, accurately mixing and measuring chemicals and powders, collecting data and documenting results, and operating high temperature ovens and furnaces.Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide operations and laboratory support to Carbon R&D Engineers as required to meet R&D program objectives.
  • Complete laboratory-scale material processing, testing and experiments.
  • Complete basic test sample and development material machining using a band saw, TimeSaver, drill press and other hand machine tools.
  • Load/unload, operate and monitor high temperature furnaces and ovens
  • Accurately weigh, measure and document characteristics of development brake disks and test materials through densification, oxidation protection system application and other carbon material processes.
  • Transport materials throughout the facility using a pallet jack, Big-Joe and/or fork-lift.
  • Complete non-destructive and mechanical/thermal properties testing.
  • Complete basic machining operations on carbon disks and test materials.
  • Prepare and apply oxidation inhibitor coatings and complete testing/characterization of coated materials.
  • Support CDS operations and test material processing across carbon facilities
  • Complete other laboratory process, test and material development activities as defined by R&D Project Engineers.
  • Complete technical reports including monthly status reports and Carbon Technical Notes.Basic Qualifications:
    • AA/AS degree (or other 2-year post high school training) with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
    • OR In the absence of a HS diploma, GED or AA/AS degree, 8 years of relevant experience is required
    • OR A Bachelors degree in the appropriate discipline and less than 2 years of relevant experience.
    • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident Green Card holderPreferred Qualifications
      • Machine-operating experience including, but not limited to, setup and operation of basic machining tools including surface grinder, drill press, TimeSaver and band saw; utilization of a wide variety of hand and power to accomplish basic repair and process required setups; calipers, inspection gauges, and other measuring equipment.
      • Experience with high temperature furnaces, ovens and other process equipment
      • Currently taking classes towards an engineering or other technical degree
      • Certificate program or equivalent in industrial machining, including CNC operations/programming, or other technical skills/competencies
      • Two years of industrial service
      • Laboratory experience
